It was never going to be easy.

Since Hideo Kojima’s departure from his beloved Metal Gear series, those who supported and loved the franchise were worried about where it would go next. Without the unique talent and vision that led to some of the most incredible video games of our time, how would a ship without its captain be able to sail into calm seas?

Judging by Metal Gear’s first post-Kojima entry, the journey is going to enter choppy waters.

Metal Gear ‘Survive’ is a bit of an odd direction. It doesn’t follow ‘Big Boss’, neither does it, so far, include any recognisable faces from the MGS universe. It features worms holes, a focus on biological weapons and the series’ first co-op gameplay. It isn’t the baby of Kojima anymore, it’s looking more like a hybrid of ‘popular’ trends in a bid to broaden its appeal.

I sympathise with my fellow Metal Gear veterans. At first sight I already dislike this new direction, but it would be unfair to judge a book by its cover. Whatever Konami has in store for this small expansion to The Phantom Pain, it’s definitely going to be treading a very different path. Whether that path stays close to Kojima’s signature style, or strays off into something unrecognisable, remains to be seen.

Check out its first trailer below, if you haven’t already.
