In a surprise announcement, Marvel and Square-Enix are teaming up in a partnership which will span multiple games. Square-Enix will organise the production of “original games based on beloved Marvel Super Heroes.”

The Avengers project is the first game in production and will be developed by both Crystal Dynamics (well known for their recent Tomb Raider titles), and Eidos-Montréal (developers of the recent Deus Ex games.) Apparently the game will be packed with characters, environments and iconic moments that, “have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise.”

Instead of focusing on the current line-up of films, ‘The Avengers project’ will feature an original storyline and universe that fans will able to play in for years to come. Jay Ong from Marvel Entertainment broke the news:

“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced. The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

More details on The Avengers project, as well as other games in the pipeline, will arrive in 2018.

Personal Opinion

As a huge fan of the Marvel movies, I couldn’t be happier to FINALLY see Marvel making their mark in the video game industry. Coupled with the fantastic Spider-Man PS4 game that Insomniac Games are developing and it looks like Marvel fans are in for a treat over the next few years.
